Ancestry Research Tools

Use Darker Styled Look and Feel: A high-contrast dark theme is applied to the Ancestry website, replacing the default bright whites with darker tones. This styling is applied consistently across all pages of the website, including the homepage, profile pages, and search results.

Advanced Research Toolbar: The research tools menu is enhanced with options like Save to Tree, Quick Edit, and Edit Relationships. These links are fully customizable, allowing you to enable or disable specific tools based on your preferences. The tools also appear on other users family trees. Links and buttons on the page have letter icons next to them which correspond to their keyboard shortcuts.

Quick Search via Alt + Q: Press Alt + Q (Option + Q on Mac) on any web page to open a search prompt, or type ga then Space in the address bar. On supported genealogy sites the previous Ctrl + / shortcut still works for now. This prompt enables you to quickly search for record collections in the Card Catalog using keywords, such as census years, locations, or record types. Results are displayed immediately, and selecting an entry takes you directly to the collections search page.

Add Select All People Link to Hints: A button titled Select all people is added to the top of the hint sidebar when you review a hint from a profile’s Hints tab and reach Add new information to your tree. Clicking this button allows you to automatically select all of the people connected to the record with a single click.

Add Select All People Link to Records: A button titled Select all people is added to the top of the Add new information to your tree page, whether you are saving a record, a hint or a person from another member tree. Clicking this button allows you to automatically select all of the people connected to the record with a single click.

Add Advanced Search to Profiles: With Advanced Search, a new button is added to profile pages of a person in an Ancestry family tree titled Advanced Search. Ancestry Basic Search allows you to perform a basic search of only name, birth date, birth place, death date and death place information. Hovering over the new button opens a menu that searches the person on Ancestry, FamilySearch Records, FamilySearch Tree, FindMyPast, MyHeritage, WikiTree, FindAGrave and Newspapers.com, each filled in with the name, dates, places, parents and spouse from the profile, with a tick box per site and a Search selected option that opens every ticked site at once. Small FS Wiki buttons are also added beside the birth and death place names, which search that location in the FamilySearch Wiki. Civil registration buttons appear beside a place when an index covers it and the event year: FreeBMD and GRO for England and Wales, ScotlandsPeople for Scotland, IrishGenealogy for Ireland, the state registries of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania, NZ BDM for New Zealand, and the archives of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Manitoba. Each one fills in that site’s own search form with the name and year, adding the sex, the mother’s maiden name or the parents’ names where the index records them, and runs the search for you. The age at death is added to the death line of the profile card, worked out from the birth and death dates already shown, so you can see how long someone lived without doing the arithmetic. Where only a year is recorded the age is given as a range, and people who are still living show their age today instead.

Link Place Names to Google Maps: Place names on Ancestry become clickable links to Google Maps, on the profile page and on the family tree. That covers the birth and death places on the profile card, every place in the Timeline, and the birth and death places on the card that opens when you click a person in the tree. The text looks exactly as it always did and only underlines when you point at it. Clicking opens the location in a new tab, and middle-click or ctrl/cmd-click opens it in a background tab, so you can line up several places to look at without leaving the page you are on.

Advanced Paging for Image Viewer: New buttons are added to the bottom of the Ancestry image viewer allowing you to skip forward or backward by 2, 10, 25 or 50 pages at a time. This feature helps when working with large records by helping you to quickly page through the images.

Advanced Search for Records Page: A new button titled Search is added to the top of text transcription record pages, alongside the existing Save and Share buttons. When hovered, a drop down menu will appear allowing you to search multiple genealogy platforms based on the record you are viewing. This feature saves time and ensures accuracy by using the records existing data to search for more records easily.

Save All People in Tree to CSV File: A new button titled Download CSV appears at the top right of the list of people in any family tree. Clicking this button downloads every person in the list, with your current search, sort and filters, into a CSV file for your research project, including birth, death and marriage details, places, parents, spouses, notes and more.

Save Member Search Results to CSV: A new button titled Download CSV appears above your results on the Member Search page, along with a box to choose how many pages to download, which defaults to all of them. Clicking it collects every matching member and saves a CSV containing their display name, the surname, year and place of the research interest that matched, their location and age range, the exact dates they joined and last signed in, how many family trees they have, and a direct link to their profile. Ancestry returns this list in a different order every time it is requested, so the download reads through it several times and removes duplicates, which recovers members that reading the list once would miss.

Save Public Member Trees to CSV: On the Public Member Trees search results on Ancestry, clicking a person’s tree count or View all opens a window listing every tree that person appears in, ten at a time. A new button titled Download CSV is added to the top of that window. Clicking it reads every page of that list and saves a CSV with one row per tree: the name as it appears in that tree, gender, birth, death, marriages and residences, parents, spouses and children, the tree name and size, how many records, sources and media are attached, and direct links to the person and to the tree.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Family Tree: Keyboard shortcuts will be enabled on any Ancestry family tree you view, so you can hover over any item and press a single character to quickly access common items and actions. A guide is added to the bottom right hand corner of the family tree which lists all available shortcuts. A Search button is added to the person card on trees that do not have one, such as public trees belonging to other members, so you can search records for anyone in any tree you view. Hovering over the Search button on any tree opens an Advanced Search menu which searches that person on eight genealogy websites, and you can choose which sites to include. Pressing A while hovering over a person opens the same menu without opening their card. The person card also gains an age on its death line, worked out from the birth and death dates already shown, so you can see how long someone lived without doing the arithmetic. Add Keyboard Navigation to Search: On any Ancestry search results page you can use the arrow keys to move between pages. Pressing the left arrow will move you back a page and pressing the right arrow will move you forward a page.

Search Family Trees by Name: A search box is added to the top of the Create and Manage Trees page that enables you to search your family trees by name with a quick autocomplete popup. Your trees, including trees shared with you, are indexed automatically and refreshed about every six hours; the Index Trees button refreshes the list on demand. This feature also works with Quick Search.

Index Family Tree in Quick Search: A button is added to the list of all people page for your family trees labelled Index People. Clicking this button will index all the people in the tree, allowing you to open their profiles by typing their name into the Quick Search box. Once indexed, the tree keeps itself up to date, checking for changes about every six hours.

Index DNA Tests in Quick Search: A button is added to the DNA settings page labeled Index DNA Tests. Your DNA tests are indexed automatically and refreshed about every six hours; the button refreshes the list on demand. Open the match list of a test by typing “dna” followed by the test name into Quick Search.

View DNA Inheritance Paths: New buttons are added to the bottom right hand corner of your family tree which allow you to view the DNA inheritance paths for the person you are viewing. You can view paths for Y-DNA, X-DNA, and mtDNA by toggling the buttons. Works in the horizontal, vertical and fan views of the tree.

Family Tree Screenshot Tools: Ancestry Tree Cleaner removes navigation icons, hint icons, and other visual distractions from the family tree view. Ancestry Printable Tree converts the family tree view into a black-and-white, high-contrast design optimized for printing. You can toggle between these modes to customize the trees appearance from buttons in the the bottom right hand corner of your family tree.

Easy Hide and Expand in Family Tree: New buttons titled Expand tree, Collapse tree and Hide siblings are added to the bottom right of your family tree in the vertical view. Expand tree opens one more generation in every branch each time it is clicked, Collapse tree closes the outermost generation again, and Hide siblings hides every sibling from view. This feature helps keep your family tree layout clean and focused, particularly when working with direct lineages.

Relationship Finder in Family Tree: Adds a Relationship button to the tree panel in the vertical family tree view. Click it, then click any two people in the tree to see how they are related (for example 3rd cousin 2x removed, or wife of 2nd great-granduncle), with their names and dates.

Custom Tree Viewing Options: Ancestry keeps its Tree viewing options separately for every individual tree, so each new tree starts with additional spouses hidden and has to be adjusted by hand through the More menu and then Tree viewing options. This feature applies your preferred options for you the first time you open each tree. Always view all spouses shows all marriages from the moment the page loads, and is on by default. Hide relationship line labels removes the small text captions indicating relationships, and is off by default. Choose which options you want from the settings icon, or by clicking Edit advanced settings in the main popup window. Your choices are saved to your Ancestry account exactly as if you had set them yourself.

Save to Tree Name Auto-fill: The name of the person you are adding is detected and automatically populated in the Person in Tree input box in the save popup window. This ensures the name is entered accurately and consistently without requiring manual input. This speeds up saving individuals to your tree, especially during lengthy research sessions building DNA trees.

Text Records Name Auto-fill: The name associated with a text transcription record is detected and automatically populated into the Name input box on the Save to Tree popup window, eliminating the need for manual typing or copying and pasting. This feature is particularly helpful when saving large numbers of text records during long research sessions, reducing repetitive tasks and ensuring consistent name entry.

Image Records Name Auto-fill: The name associated with the image record you are viewing is detected and automatically filled into the Person in tree input box on the Save to Tree popup window. This eliminates the need for manual entry and is particularly useful when working with multiple records in a single research session.

Change Text Case via Shift + Up/Down: Holding the shift key and pressing the up or down arrows on your keyboard will change the text case of any input to uppercase or standard case, so you can quickly change the capitalization of a field to suit your preference.

Automatically Expand All ThruLines: Every collapsed group of DNA matches in a ThruLine is opened automatically when the page loads, so you see the whole set of connections at once instead of clicking each group open one at a time. This is especially useful for taking screenshots or for reviewing every match descending from an ancestor in a single pass.

Add Download Image Button to Viewer: A new button titled Download this image is added to the the image viewer on Ancestry. Clicking this button will automatically download the image to your computer.

Always Search Global Records: All searches on the card catalog will automatically default to searching global records instead of searching only within your own country. The checkbox at the top of the Filters section to display national records only will automatically be unchecked when you run your search.

Ancestry DNA Tools

Ancestry Match List Sorting: With Ancestry Match List Sorting, you can modify the toggle button in the Quick Settings section of Genealogy Assistant to choose between loading Newest matches or loading Closest matches by default. Selecting Newest will load the most recent matches first and selecting Closest will automatically load the highest cM matches first.

Ancestry Shared Matches Sorting: With Ancestry Shared Matches Sorting, the ProTools Matches of Matches tab for any DNA match will default to sorting by the highest amount of shared centimorgans (cM) with your match. This helps save time processing large amounts of matches while working to establish common ancestors.

Surname Comparison Tool: This tool allows you to add all surnames from a DNA match’s linked tree, or from the “List of all people” page on any tree, with a single click. Once added, you can compare which surnames are shared by multiple people, including support for surname variants. You can also export all of the surnames you’ve captured to a CSV file for offline research.

Add Select All Button to Matches List: A button titled Select All Matches is added to the filters toolbar when viewing your DNA matches list on Ancestry. When this button is clicked, all matches appearing on the page are automatically selected with a single click. This works with filters enabled and in surname/birth place searches. It is a fast way to organize matches into DNA groups for genetic genealogy research.

Select All Button for Shared Matches: A new Select All Matches button is added to the filters toolbar on the shared matches page. When adding people to groups, clicking this button automatically selects all matches on the current page, while a Deselect All Matches button lets you quickly clear all selections.

Highlight DNA Matches by cM: A bold red highlight is automatically applied to the amount of shared DNA for matches over 25 centimorgans. The threshold is customizable, allowing you to adjust the cM value to suit your research needs. In addition to the cM value, the side of the match is highlighted in pink for maternal matches and blue for paternal matches, and public linked trees are highlighted in green.

Highlight Shared Matches by cM: Shared matches are automatically highlighted in bold red text if they share 25 centimorgans or more with you, and matches of matches are automatically highlighted if they share 50 centimorgans or more by default. This threshold is customizable, allowing you to adjust the cM value to fit your research needs. This helps you prioritize high-value matches of matches, providing valuable insights into potential shared ancestors and key DNA connections.

Download Pages as CSV File: A new button titled Download CSV appears at the top of your DNA Matches page, along with an input box to select the number of pages you would like to download. This data can be used in a variety of tools and applications to enhance your research and uncover valuable connections.

Download Shared Matches as CSV: A new button titled Download CSV appears in the filters toolbar of your shared matches page. Clicking this button will automatically download the shared matches on the page you are viewing to a CSV file.

Download Thrulines as CSV File: A button titled Download CSV is added to the top right of the header bar when you are viewing a ThruLine for an ancestor. Clicking it downloads a CSV file of every DNA match in that ThruLine without changing your view, including their predicted and tree relationships, shared cM and segments, tree size, match link, which family line they descend through and the full path from the ancestor.

Download Clusters as CSV File: A new button titled Download CSV appears at the top of each cluster list on the Ancestry DNA clusters page. Clicking this button will automatically download a CSV file of all the people appearing in the cluster.

Open Shared Matches from Match Name: When viewing any Ancestry DNA matches list, clicking on the match name will automatically navigate to the shared matches tab of the DNA match. Clicking the profile photo will automatically navigate to the trees tab of the DNA match.

Open Trees from Shared Match Photo: When viewing any Ancestry DNA shared matches list, clicking on the matches profile photo will automatically navigate to the trees tab of the DNA match. Clicking the match name will automatically navigate to the shared matches tab of the DNA match.

Add Keyboard Shortcuts to DNA Matches: Keyboard shortcuts for commonly accessed items are available on any Ancestry DNA match profile page. Links and buttons that have keyboard shortcuts are identified by the letter icon which appears to the right of them. Using keyboard shortcuts helps to save time and reduce strain from repeated movements.

Add Keyboard Shortcuts to Matches List: On your Ancestry DNA matches list, hover over any match and press n, r, or g on your keyboard to instantly open the Add/Edit Note, Relationship, or Groups dialog for that match.

DNA Painter Shared cM Tool Button: A new button titled Shared cM Tool is added into all DNA match pages on Ancestry. Clicking this button opens DNA Painters Shared cM Tool in a new tab, automatically pre-filled with the shared cM amount from the DNA match. This feature speeds up analyzing shared DNA and identifying potential relationships, saving time and improving accuracy in genetic genealogy research.

Segment Stats on DNA Match Pages: A line is added under the shared DNA amount on every Ancestry DNA match page showing the unweighted shared cM, the number of segments, the longest segment and the average segment size (AScM, unweighted cM divided by segments). Ancestry only shows these values inside the Shared DNA pop-up. Longest segment and average segment size are the figures researchers with endogamous ancestry use to judge which matches are worth pursuing. Clicking AScM opens a video explaining it. With Highlight AScM turned on in Advanced settings, the AScM is shown in bold when a match reaches the shared cM, longest segment and AScM values set there (90, 20 and 12 cM by default, from Gil Bardige’s method).

Top Pagination for Matches List: Page navigation is added to the top of the AncestryDNA matches list, allowing you to navigate between pages using buttons or by typing the page number and pressing enter. This aides navigation by allowing you to move between pages without having to scroll through the entire list.

Top Pagination for Shared Matches: Page navigation is added to the top of the AncestryDNA shared matches list, allowing you to navigate between pages using buttons or by typing the page number and pressing enter. This aides navigation by allowing you to move between pages without having to scroll through the entire list.

Add Percentage to Origins Regions: When viewing your ethnicity estimate on the AncestryDNA origins page, each sub-regions DNA percentage is added together and displayed at the end of the macro-regions name.

Sort Regions by Parent & Grandparent: A sort button is added to every column of the regions by parent & grandparent chart on the AncestryDNA inheritance page. Click a parent or grandparent to sort every column by the regions that person passed down to you, from largest to smallest; the chart expands to show all of your regions. Click the sort button on your own column to put the regions back in their original order.

Colour Code DNA Matches by Side: A pink highlight to maternal matches and a blue highlight to paternal matches are applied in your DNA matches list. This feature provides a simple and effective way to organize and analyze your DNA matches, helping you concentrate on the matches most relevant to your research goals.

Always Display 50 Matches in List: Ancestry DNA matches lists are set to display 50 matches per page instead of the default 20. This change applies across all DNA tests and match lists. This improves efficiency by allowing you to view more matches at once, making it easier to analyze DNA connections with less paging.

Hide Matches Already Connected to Tree: A new button is added at the top of your DNA matches list titled connected matches hidden, unhide? When this feature is activated, all matches that have been linked to your family tree are hidden from the matches list. You can easily show or hide these matches as needed by clicking the same button.

Add All People Link to Matches Trees: A new link titled View all people in tree will appear next to the number of people in the connected trees of your DNA matches. This feature eliminates unnecessary navigation steps and helps to quickly access the list of all people in the family tree.

Clusters Table Enhancements: When viewing the Ancestry DNA clusters page, column headers include the full match name and are rotated to a vertical orientation. Helpful highlighting is applied to the rows and columns when hovering over matches in the grid, making it easier to process at a glance.

Preload Number of Thrulines Matches: On the Card view of your ThruLines list of all ancestors, a button titled Preload Match Numbers is added beside the Filter control. Ancestry shows no match counts on these cards, so clicking this loads the DNA match count and shared cM range for every ancestor at once and displays it on each card, letting you see where the large clusters and the gaps are at a glance. Results are remembered so they reappear instantly next time, and clicking the button again while it is running stops it.

Copy Surnames from Family Tree: A new button titled Copy all surnames is added to the top of your DNA matches surnames list on the trees tab of AncestryDNA. Clicking this button will copy all the surnames in their tree to your clipboard separated by commas.

Add Shared Matches to Surname Tool: A button titled Compare All Trees is added to the shared matches page. When clicked, Genealogy Assistant scans all pages of shared matches, identifies those with public linked trees, then automatically visits each match and adds their family tree surnames to the Surname Comparison Tool. This automates what would otherwise be a tedious manual process of visiting each match individually.

MyHeritage DNA Tools

Highlight DNA Matches 25cM+: DNA matches are automatically highlighted in bold red text if you share 25 centimorgans or more. The threshold is customizable, allowing you to adjust the cM value to suit your research needs. This feature simplifies the process of identifying high-value matches on MyHeritage, enabling you to focus on connections that matter most to your genealogical research. Each match also gets an AScM row under Largest segment: the shared cM divided by the number of segments. With Highlight AScM turned on in Advanced settings, it is shown in bold when the match reaches the AScM values set there.

Highlight Mutual Matches 50cM+: Mutual matches are automatically highlighted in bold red text if they share 50 centimorgans or more with each other. This threshold is fully customizable, enabling you to adjust the cM value to fit your research needs.

Download Matches Pages as CSV File: A button titled Download CSV is added to the top of your DNA matches list on MyHeritage. To the right of the button is an input field where you can specify the number of pages of matches you want to download. Once the button is clicked, Genealogy Assistant processes the selected pages and generates a downloadable CSV file containing key details about your DNA matches, including the average segment size (AScM).

Download Shared Matches as CSV File: A button titled Download CSV is added to the top of the shared matches list for any DNA match on MyHeritage. To the right of the button, an input box allows you to specify the number of pages to download. Once clicked, Genealogy Assistant automatically processes the shared matches and downloads a CSV file. A drop down arrow next to the button offers a Download triangulated option that saves only the triangulated matches.

Search Genealogy Sites from Tree: A button titled Search Genealogy Sites is added to people appearing in MyHeritage family trees. When hovered a drop down menu will appear allowing you to search multiple genealogy platforms based on the person you are viewing in the family tree.

Add Select All Button to Matches List: A button titled Select all matches is added to the top of the DNA matches list on MyHeritage which when clicked automatically selects all matches on the page. This feature is a fast way to organize matches into DNA groups for genetic genealogy research.

Add Select All Button to Shared Matches: A button titled Select all matches is added to the top of the shared matches list on MyHeritage which when clicked automatically selects all checkboxes attached to shared matches for adding people to groups. Additionally, a button titled Auto-load pages is added to the bottom of the shared matches list which can pre-load a set number of pages.

Add Pagination to Top of Matches List: Page navigation is added to the top of the DNA matches list on MyHeritage, allowing you to navigate between pages using buttons or by typing the page number and pressing enter. This aides navigation by allowing you to move between pages without having to scroll through the entire list.

Open Shared Matches in New Tab: When viewing a DNA match on MyHeritage, clicking on the name of a shared match name in the shared matches list will open that persons profile page in a new tab.

Default Sort by Highest Mutual Matches: Viewing shared matches on MyHeritage will default to sorting by the highest amount of shared centimorgans with your match. This helps save time processing large amounts of matches while working to establish common ancestors.

Automatically Open Shared Matches: When viewing a DNA match profile on 23andMe, the Relatives in Common section is automatically expanded, saving you a click and allowing immediate access to shared relatives.

Add Keyboard Nav to Matches List: Keyboard shortcuts are added to the DNA matches list on 23andMe for helpful page navigation. You can use the left arrow to go back a page and the right arrow to go forwards a page.

Add Keyboard Nav to Shared Matches: Keyboard shortcuts are added to the shared matches list on 23andMe for helpful page navigation. You can use the left arrow to go back a page and the right arrow to go forwards a page.

FS: Advanced Paging for Image Viewer: Buttons are added to the record viewer interface that allow you to skip forward or backward by 10 or 25 pages. This feature saves time and effort when working with large records by enabling you to quickly skip to the sections you need.

FS: Add Search Wiki Link to Places: A clickable link titled Search Wiki is added next to place names in FamilySearch person profiles. Clicking these links will automatically run a search for the location in the FamilySearch Wiki, opening the results in a new tab for easy access to records and research resources. This feature simplifies accessing location-based genealogical information, helping you efficiently research the records available for specific places in your family tree.

FTDNA: Match List Improvements: When viewing any FamilyTreeDNA matches list the background will be darker to reduce eye-strain and fatigue. The relationship tag for connected matches will also get a orange background, making it easier to identify at a glance.

FTDNA: DNA Painter Shared cM Tool: When viewing any FamilyTreeDNA matches list, clickable links are added to the shared cM value for each match. Clicking these links will open the DNA Painter Shared cM Tool in a new tab, pre-filled with the shared cM value from the match.

FTDNA: Add Groups to Matches List: Add your FamilyTreeDNA DNA matches to colour-coded groups, just like on other platforms. A new button titled Add/Manage Groups is added to the top of the DNA matches list on FamilyTreeDNA. Clicking this button will open a popup window where you can create, view, and edit groups of matches. This feature is a fast way to organize matches into DNA groups for genetic genealogy research.

ScotlandsPeople: Keyboard Navigation: Enables keyboard navigation for all search results pages on ScotlandsPeople. You can press the left arrow to go back a page and press the right arrow to go forwards a page.

GEDmatch: DNA Painter Shared cM Tool: When using the GEDmatch OneToMany DNA comparison tool, values in the field Total cM become clickable links to DNA Painters Shared cM Tool. Clicking these links will open a new tab, pre-filled with the shared cM value from the match.

LivingDNA: Download Match List as CSV: Export your data for personal projects, pushing your research to the limits of what’s possible in genealogy today. A button titled Download CSV is added above your DNA relatives list on LivingDNA. Clicking it saves your entire match list to a CSV file, following the sort order and any search term you currently have applied. The file also includes details LivingDNA does not show on the page, such as the largest segment you share with each match in centimorgans, and the average segment size (AScM).

LivingDNA: Download Shared Matches as CSV: Export your data for personal projects, pushing your research to the limits of what’s possible in genealogy today. A button titled Download CSV is added beside the shared matches heading on any LivingDNA match profile. Clicking it saves every relative you have in common with that person to a CSV file, including the estimated relationship, the number of segments you share, the largest segment in centimorgans and the average segment size (AScM).

Canadiana: Image Viewer Tools: Adds three tools to the image viewer on Canadiana Heritage. Skip buttons beside the paging controls jump backwards and forwards by 1, 2, 10, 25 or 50 images at a time. The left and right arrow keys move to the previous and next image. A Download pages button in the lower toolbar lets you pick a first and last image number and saves every full-resolution image in that range to your computer as a single ZIP file.

FindAGrave: Search Genealogy Websites: A button titled Search Genealogy Websites is added beside Share on FindAGrave memorial pages. Hover over it for a drop-down that searches Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast, MyHeritage, WikiTree and Newspapers.com for the person on the memorial, using their name, dates, places and family members. Tick the sites you use and Search selected opens them all at once.

Support and Suggestions

If something is not working, right-click anywhere on the page where you see the problem and choose “Report an issue on this page”. The extension shows you exactly what it will send, then asks for your email and a short description. That report includes a snapshot of the page itself, which is usually all we need to find the cause. You can also use the Report an issue link in the pop-up panel.
