Highlight Shared Matches by cM

What problem does Highlight Shared Matches by cM solve?

When you open a DNA match’s shared matches page, Ancestry shows two cM values for every person: how much they share with you and how much they share with the match. Scanning those two numbers down a long list to find the strongest shared matches is slow. Highlight Shared Matches by cM paints both values in bold red whenever they cross your thresholds so the best shared matches jump off the page.

How does Highlight Shared Matches by cM work?

On any shared matches page, the shared cM value with you is shown in bold red whenever it is at or above your “with you” threshold, and the shared cM value with the match is shown in bold red whenever it is at or above your “with the match” threshold. Both values are enlarged so they are easy to read as you scroll through the list. The two thresholds are independent so you can tune one without affecting the other. A small open-in-new-tab icon appears next to each cM value, and clicking the cM value opens DNA Painter’s Shared cM Tool in a new tab with that value pre-filled.

How do I use Highlight Shared Matches by cM?
  • Ensure Highlight Shared Matches by cM is enabled in the Genealogy Assistant pop-up panel.
  • Open a DNA match and click the Shared Matches tab. Any value that meets your thresholds will be highlighted in bold red.
  • To change the thresholds, open the Genealogy Assistant pop-up and click the settings icon next to Highlight Shared Matches by cM. The Advanced Settings page opens at the DNA Match Highlighting section. Update Ancestry Shared Matches (the threshold for cM shared with you) and Ancestry Matches of Matches (the threshold for cM shared with the match), then reload the shared matches page. Settings save automatically.
