Quick Search can jump to record collections, DNA tests, and people across genealogy sites, but out of the box it does not know about the people in your own Ancestry family trees. Index Ancestry Family Tree in Quick Search builds a local index of every person in a tree so they show up as results in the Quick Search prompt alongside record collections.

How does Index Ancestry Family Tree in Quick Search work?

On the Overview page of any Ancestry family tree, an Index People button is added to the top of the page alongside a status label showing how many people have been indexed for this tree. Clicking Index People walks every page of the tree in the background, shows a progress overlay with a Cancel option, and saves the people to a local index in your browser. Once a tree has been indexed, the button becomes Reindex so you can refresh the data any time your tree changes, and every indexed person becomes searchable from the Quick Search prompt (Ctrl + /) with the tree name shown in a coloured pill next to each result.

How do I use Index Ancestry Family Tree in Quick Search?
  • Ensure Index Ancestry Family Tree in Quick Search is enabled in the Genealogy Assistant pop-up panel.
  • Open any Ancestry family tree Overview page.
  • Click Index People to build the index for this tree. The progress overlay shows which page is being read, and you can stop the process at any time with Cancel.
  • Once the index has been built, open Quick Search with Alt + Q (or Option + Q on a Mac) and start typing a name to find people in this tree.
  • Click Reindex any time you want to refresh the data.
