23andMe: Download Shared Matches as CSV File

What problem does 23andMe Download Shared Matches as CSV File solve?

23andMe lets you see the relatives you have in common with each match, but it does not let you export that list. Working through clusters of shared matches outside of the website, or comparing them across visits, means a lot of manual copying. 23andMe Download Shared Matches as CSV File adds a one-click download button to the Relatives in Common page that walks through the shared list and saves a CSV containing both your shared cM with each person and their shared cM with the original match.

How does 23andMe Download Shared Matches as CSV File work?

On any 23andMe Relatives in Common page, a Download CSV button is added to the toolbar above the shared matches list, along with a box where you can choose how many pages to download (leave it empty to download every page) and a gear icon labelled Download Settings.

The shared matches are read straight from 23andMe in a handful of requests, however long the list, and saved in the order the page shows them. A progress overlay shows the download, with a Cancel button to stop at any time.

The CSV file is saved when the download completes, with a filename that includes the names of both the original tester and the match so different cluster downloads stay distinct. Click the gear icon to change the download speed.

23andMe only shows the DNA two of your matches share with each other as a percentage, so the columns ending in (You) and every column after Star Status describe each shared match’s relationship with you, taken from your own DNA Relatives list.

Relationship Range lists the relationships 23andMe considers possible, and Predicted Relationship is its own prediction before any change you have made to it. Side shows whether the match is on your mother’s or father’s side, where 23andMe can tell. Sex, Location, Family Surnames, Family Locations and the four grandparent birthplaces are what the match has shared on their profile, and Opted In is the date they joined DNA Relatives.

Connection shows whether you are connected or have an invitation waiting, Messaged reads Yes once you have exchanged messages, and In Your Tree links to the match in your 23andMe family tree. Last Active and the haplogroups depend on your 23andMe membership and are blank when it does not include them.
