What problem does Search Ancestry Family Trees by Name solve?
Ancestry’s Create and Manage Trees page lists every one of your trees but gives you no way to search inside them. If you want to find a specific person you have to open each tree and search it one at a time. Search Ancestry Family Trees by Name adds a search box at the top of the Create and Manage Trees page that finds people across all of your indexed trees at once.
How does Search Ancestry Family Trees by Name work?
A search box is added to the top of the Create and Manage Trees page alongside an Index Trees button. Clicking Index Trees reads every person from each of your Ancestry family trees once and stores the index locally in your browser. After that, typing in the search box shows matching people as you type, with the tree name shown in a coloured pill next to each result. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move between results and press Enter to open the highlighted person. The button becomes a Rebuild Index button after the first index so you can refresh the data any time your trees change.
How do I use Search Ancestry Family Trees by Name?
- Ensure Search Ancestry Family Trees by Name is enabled in the Genealogy Assistant pop-up panel.
- Open the Create and Manage Trees page on Ancestry.
- Click Index Trees once to build the search index. This step is only needed the first time.
- Start typing a name in the search box. Use the
UpandDownarrow keys to move between matches and pressEnterto open the highlighted person. - Click Rebuild Index any time you want to refresh the data.
