Custom Tree Viewing Options

What problem does Custom Tree Viewing Options solve?

Ancestry keeps its Tree viewing options separately for every individual tree, so each new tree starts with additional spouses hidden and has to be adjusted by hand through the More menu and then Tree viewing options. If you work across several trees, that is the same handful of clicks every time you open a new one. Custom Tree Viewing Options applies your preferred options for you the first time you open each tree.

How does Custom Tree Viewing Options work?

Your preferred options are applied automatically the first time you open each family tree. Two options are available, and you choose which ones you want by clicking on the settings icon next to the feature name or “Edit advanced settings” from the main extension window.

Always view all spouses in trees: Shows all marriages from the moment the page loads, so second and later spouses appear beside a person instead of being hidden. This option is on by default.

Hide relationship line labels in trees: Removes the small text captions indicating relationships that sit between the generations, giving you a plainer view of the tree. This option is off by default.

Your choices are saved to your Ancestry account exactly as if you had set them yourself, so they are still in place if you open the same tree on another computer, and they appear as you would expect under Tree viewing options on Ancestry.

If you would rather choose an option yourself on a particular tree, untick that option in the Advanced Settings page first, otherwise it is applied again the next time you open the tree.

How do I use Custom Tree Viewing Options?
  • Ensure Custom Tree Viewing Options is enabled in the Genealogy Assistant pop-up panel.
  • Open any Ancestry family tree. The tree is drawn with your chosen options already applied.
  • To change which options are applied, open the Genealogy Assistant pop-up and click the settings icon next to Custom Tree Viewing Options, or click Edit advanced settings at the bottom of the pop-up.
  • Tick or untick Always view all spouses in trees and Hide relationship line labels in trees, then reload your family tree.
